The Bouvier Community Garden is a place of beauty and
rejuvenation for our community. Here we take part in a sustainable
community food system, foster environmental education and healthy
recreation, and preserve valuable open space for ourselves and our
children.
Prompted by a conversation with the Neighborhood Gardens
Association, the Newbold Neighbors Clean & Green committee
met on Sept. 9, 2008 to take a look at 1348 and 1350 Bouvier
Street, two abandoned garden plots owned by NGA. We met for
our first work day on November 8, 2008 to pull weeds, trim back
overgrowth, and uncover any potential problems that would hamper
the land's use for a public garden. In pouring rain, over 10
people turned up, including curious children passing by from the
neighborhood. The lot was cleared back and no major problems
were discovered. At the next Clean & Green meeting, plans were
presented by our members for a tentative layout.
NGA's
mission is to ensure the continuity and long-term preservation of
community-managed gardens and open space in low and moderate-income
neighborhoods. With the support of NGA, we have entered into a
conversation with Council President Anna Verna's office to acquire
additional neighboring plots that would allow the garden to
encompass a total of 5 city lots.
Bennett Compost
We've been working with Bennett
Compost to create a composting site for their residential
composting operations. The owner, Tim Bennett, has
constructed two bins and will be providing finished compost to the
garden!
Come to the Bouvier Community Garden equipped only with old containers like yogurt cups, plastic soda bottle, milk cartons, etc and we will supply the soil and seeds/starters to plant and watch grow! Perfect gift for any Mother (or anyone else you want to have more plants)!
Also, for anyone who has leftover seeds and is looking for more variety, bring your extras to swap. There's still time to plant, especially for hardy plants that will grow into autumn.
This is a VERY family friendly event, but please feel welcome even if you don't have children.
3rd Saturday of every month through Sept.
